Dear Alexis,

I’m a relatively tall girl at 5’ 10”. For most of my life I’ve dated really tall guys…lots of basketball players. LOL!! Anyway, I recently met this little guy. He says he’s 5’9” but I think he’s more like 5’8”. Suffice it to say that, since I normally wear heels, I’m quite a bit taller than he is. At least I feel like I am. It’s a bit of a Tom Cruise / Katie Holmes situation.

Anyway, I’ve seen him around a bit lately and as far as I can tell, he’s warm and kind and apart from the fact that he’s a miniature version of who I normally date, I think I could like him. He hasn’t asked me out but I know he’s interested. I also know the height difference is on his mind too because he asked a mutual friend if she thought I’d ever date someone shorter than me. I think I’m in but I don’t know if I can get over the height difference. What should I do?

Stilts

Dear Stilts,

The fact that you’ve taken the time to write to me about this shows that you are at least somewhat interested in this guy. I think that’s really all you need to go on. Some people can do the height difference without a second thought, some others wouldn’t even take 60 seconds to consider it. The fact that you’re thinking about it, and writing about it (!), shows that you haven’t dismissed him totally so listen to your actions.

If, as you say, he’s kind and you’re attracted to him, that should be enough to at least go on a few dates. We all know that sometimes even when we’re convinced a guy is going to be perfect, he turns out to be a dud after a few drinks and a night out. This guy could be perfect for you or he could end up in the reject pile, maybe for reasons other than his height. You’ll never know until you try…

One more thought; a very good male friend of mine (who incidentally is around 5’9”) once told me that “short guys work harder.” Maybe you can let me know if you think that’s true?

Good Luck!
